Our Story
Neurologist Richard Isaacson began practicing Alzheimer’s prevention in 200x. At a time when the mainstream medical community was fixated on pharmacological solutions, he foresaw the parallels to preventative cardiology. Within a generation, that new field had slashed the rate of heart disease in the U.S. through the identification and reduction of modifiable risk factors. Dr. Isaacson founded the first Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic in the U.S. at Weill-Cornell Medicine.
Recognizing that the public remained widely unaware of the lifestyle-dementia connection, Dr. Isaacson began building awareness online. In 200x, he worked with web developer Mark McInnis (RETAIN `{`co?`}`founder) to build websites targeting specific domains such as nutrition. In 200x, they launched AlzU, a free online system using comprehensive health education and cognitive testing. An IRB-approved study of users showed that learning about dementia greatly improved willingness to make lifestyle changes.
These experiences and a desire to more broadly influence risk-reduction behavior change fed the development of a RETAIN prototype by 2019 and RETAIN Health.
